  • What is the Course Programme?

The Course Programme has a wide variety of courses which will help you to continue your professional development as a Dentist or member of the Dental Team. Most courses contribute towards your CPD (Continued Professional Development) hours, of which you are required to complete a set amount each 5 year cycle (see CPD Obligations for more details). Courses are provided by Dental Postgraduate Centres, which KSS then list for you to browse through and select the ones you want. Since 2007/8, we have displayed the Course Programme online. This has proved very beneficial for our users, as they have access to the Programme from any Internet-enabled computer, and the information provided is always the latest available.

In order to help ensure you receive a place on the course of your choice you are advised to book at least 6 weeks in advance.

Some centres also run a few private courses for subjects not funded by the NHS. These include Cosmetic Dentistry, Botox and others. These courses will be charged at higher rates, which the centre will inform you of.

Which Centres are covered by KSS?

There are eight Postgraduate Centres in the KSS remit: Ashford, Brighton, Canterbury, Chicester, Eastbourne, Guildford, Haywards Heath and Tunbridge Wells. Each centre runs a good selection of courses that will contribute towards continuing your professional development as a Dentist or member of the Dental Team.

Although costs vary slightly from centre to centre the administration fees for lectures only are just £5 for 1-3 hours or £10 for 3-6 hours. Please note that these administration fees are non-refundable, and do not apply to hands-on courses, or Core Courses. The prices for most of these courses will be mentioned in their descriptions, or if not please call the centre providing the course and inquire. Lunch is priced between £15 and £20 per delegate.

    The FP84 0306 Form

Claims should be made using the new FP84 0306 Form
From 1 April 2006 the payment of travel and susbsitence for dentists undertaking verifiable continuing professional development (CPD) was delegated to Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) with delegation of the commissioning of primary care dental services.

    Completing the FP84 0306 Form
The FP84 0306 form will appear as a single sheet that has been produced electronically. You may obtain a copy from the Postgraduate Dean's office or from the course organiser.

The copy of the form may act as a course certificate for evidence of verifiable Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity for the GDC so keep it safe. IT is the dentist's responsibility to retain a copy of this form for his/her own records. The PCT, as part of their system or probity checks, may also ask for evidence of attendance.

Part 1 - Particulars of Dentist
    The following must be completed:
    • Personal Details - Surname and first name
    • GDC number - this is used for personal identification in GDC checks later on
    • Name of PCT
    • PCT performer number of dentist making the claim
Part 2 - Particulars of Dentist
Section 63 as a category now no longer exists. These courses will now be known as Deanery Courses.

The appropriate box describing whether the activity is a 'Deanery Course', and 'Other Approved Course' or 'Other verifiable CPD Activity', such as e-learning, must be ticked, as the PCT will carry out random probity checks.

Course details, title, venue and date must be entered. For those that are not Deanery Courses, it would be a good idea to keep a copy of the course programme or any certificates issued, with your retained copy of the FP84 0306, in case of later probity checking by the GDC or PCT.

For Deanery courses the Postgraduate Dean's office will keep the details of the course on their database.

The length of the course should be entered as the number of verifiable hours of CPD, for example - a course starting at 10:00am and finishing at 12:30pm would count as 2.5 hours of CPD. It is very important to fill in this amount properly as you will be using this box as evidence of CPD activity.

    Part 3 - Travel & Subsistence
Travel and subsistence may only be claimed for attending Deanery or VT courses.
    • A separate line must be used for each type of expense. You must also enter the time you left your home (or practice) to go to the course and the time you returned.
    • Claims must be accompanied by relevant tickets/receipts or credit card statements (except for mileage expenses).

FP84 claim forms, once completed and signed should be sent to your Primary Care Trust. For dentists in Kent, Surrey and Sussex the Primary Care Trust Support Services / Primary Care Agency are processing these claims. You will need to photocopy the FP84 0306, so that a copy may be retained for your own records, both for the GDC and the PCT if they carry out probity checks.

What can I claim for subsistence?

Travel and subsistence may only be claimed for attending Deanery or VT courses.

    Travelling Expenses
Public transport fares should be the cheapest available, i.e. second class rail fares and economy returns where possible.

    Mileage Allowance
At 23p per mile, for travel by car. An extra 2p per mile is payable to the claimant if another eligible dentist is taken in the same vehicle.

    Day Subsistence
Lunch (small meal) allowance is £5. To claim this you must have been absent from the practice for more than 5 hours. You must also have been absent between 1200 and 1400 hours.

Evening meal allowance is £15. To claim this you must have been away from your practice for more than 10 hours and after 1900.

24 Hours meal allowance - if you are away for 24 hours, you can claim £20. You cannot claim lunch or evening meal in addition.

    What are my CPD obligations?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is study, training, courses, seminars, reading and other activities undertaken by you that could reasonably be expected to advance your professional development as a dentist. Non-clinical activity such as seminars on practice management can also count as CPD.

    CPD Compliance
Compliance with the requirements of the General Dental Council's recertification scheme became mandatory for all dentists first registered in the UK between 1 January 1990 and 31 December 2001. Dentists first registered in the 1980's followed on 1 January 2003. Dentists registered on or before 31 December 1979 followed on 1 January 2004.

    Your Obligations
You must complete and keep records of 250 hours of CPD in every five-year cycle.

At least 75 of these 250 hours must be VERIFIABLE CPD (i.e. 15 hours per year).

Verifiable CPD meets the following criteria:
    • Concise educational aims and objectives - the activity should have a clear purpose or goal.
    • Clear anticipated outcomes - you should known what you can expect to gain as a result of taking part in the activity.
    • Quality Control - you should have an opportunity to comment, with a view to improving quality.
You will also need to provide documentary evidence of your participation from the provider, proving your participation and the number of CPD hours spent on that activity.
